 Dolphin Mile entry form

Fortune certainly appears to favour the pre Midmar Mile Dolphin Mile Surf Swim event! Near-perfect conditions, for the second year in succession, greeted those who gathered to register at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club on Sunday for the 1600m swim. The early morning brightened as the clouds lifted and warm water, a flat sea and a gentle south-westerly breeze became the order of the day. The breeze also enabled the branding of Dolphin Mile supporters, SPEEDO and SIMILASAN, to be properly displayed at registration and on the beach.

157 swimmers from age10 – 70+, of wide-ranging ability levels, and a good number for the first time, entered the pre-series Dolphin Mile Surf Swim event on Sunday. Besides the pleasant conditions, the idea of a ‘tester’ in a Midmar Mile seeding swim prior to the forthcoming Midmar Mile event appears to have been an added incentive for many of the swimmers.

Favourable beach and surf conditions allowed a start directly in front of the MSLSC Club and the group of swimmers took to the water promptly at the start siren at 7h00.

A run into the small and clean surf break had the school heading for the first buoy 150 metres off the beach. A right turn and the leading group soon broke away south towards uShaka Pier. Two left turns at either end of the short turning leg had the swimmers heading north on the longest leg of the course. Spectators observed the leading swimmers move ahead to stretch the school out over some considerable distance. The leaders took the school around the two buoys indicating the short northern turning leg of the course off Addington Hospital and then back towards the buoy off the beach. A right turn at the mark and the group were heading back to the finish on the beach.

Leading the group of swimmers around much of the course and first to exit the water was Chris McGlynn, closely followed by younger brother Michael McGlynn in a commendable performance for a 13 year old. The brothers were closely followed by Sasha-Lee Nordingen, Stephen Clarkson and Kyeta Purchase, the latter two renewing their long-standing competition at the head of a Dolphin Mile Surf Swim pack!

Results were quickly correlated and a brief presentation of ‘lucky draw’ sponsored prizes was held in the Marine Clubhouse while participants were able to enjoy the fare obtainable from the Club’s ‘Pumphouse’ refreshment facility.

The start of the Dolphin Mile Surf Swim event followed registration in the impressive Marine Surf Lifesaving Club clubhouse facility. The course was set, marshaled and patrolled by members of the Marine SLSC safety team with a rescue swimmer in the surf break, a crew in an inflatable, and others on surfskis and Malibu boards under the watchful eye of MSLC crew and event organizer,Heather Campbell. The course start and finish positions are adjusted for each of the Dolphin Mile events, according to prevailing surf conditions and in the best interests of the participating swimmers’ safety.

A special word of thanks, on behalf of the Dolphin Mile participants and organizers, must go to the Marine Surf Lifesaving Club members for inviting the Dolphin Mile Surf Swim participants to make use of their wonderful facility for these surf swim events. Thanks must also go to MSLC members at the Club on Sunday for sharing their Club facilities with the growing number of Dolphin Mile swimmers, their families and friends.

Entry form for MidMar Mile seeding event

Durban's mild winter, with warm sunny days and little humidity allows many the opportunity to be outdoors, enjoying the sunshine and balmy days.

And the participants in the 2013 Series were fortunate to have been able to enjoy the very best of these conditions.

All 9 of the scheduled Series events were held from April to September, with the weather and surf conditions proving favourable on the event dates.  While missed by some, the sardines contributed to the Series’ success by remaining absent!

For many swimmers of all abilities, from the age of 10 to 70+ years, participation is simply because they enjoy the event as a personal challenge, and as part of a healthy lifestyle and exercise regimen.

The number of swimmers participating in open water surf swimming has also shown an increase. Participation in the Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series, now at the close of its 5th year of existence, has reflected this growing interest amongst all sectors of our population.

For the record: 1191 individuals participated in the events of this year’s Series; the greatest number of entrants in a single event was 176; 68 swimmers swam at least 6 of the events, 13 of these in all 9 events!!

The completion of a single open water mile swim is a significant achievement in any person’s book of life experiences; an open water sea mile certainly takes that achievement up a level or two.

Thank you and ‘Well done’ to every participant in the Series’ events. You are winners all!!

Thank you to all Series participants who supported the EXTRA MILE initiative by ‘donating’ their swim miles. You have made a significant contribution to the supply of wheelchairs to the handicapped supported by the initiative.

Thank you too to the many who supported the Series by donating their services or product, for presentation as prizes of varying category, for use during conduct of the Series.  Special mention must be made of Tony Bath, ITWorks, Wim Kemper, Brett Davidson, Debbie Ross and Linda Daniels.

Finally, thank you to the supportive members of Marine Surf Lifesaving Club for making their wonderful facility available to the Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series participants and their families.

The proposed dates for the 2014 Dolphin Mile Surf Swim events are as follows:

  • Sunday 6th and 13th April
  • Sunday 4th and 18th May
  • Sunday 8th and 22rd June
  • Sunday 20th July (depending on sardines)
  • Sunday 3th August
  • Sunday 7th September

And don’t forget the Midmar Mile Seeding events on Sunday 8th December and Sunday 19th January.  Registration 6:00 am – Swim 7:00 am.

As a safety requirement, the bright yellow Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series swim caps MUST be worn by swimmers. The swim caps can be purchased at registration at a nominal cost.

The swim is normally over by 9h00, followed by a short prize giving where SPOT PRIZES ONLY will be awarded. This early finish allows all involved the opportunity to enjoy the rest of their Sunday.
A limited number of Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series T-shirts will be on sale at the 6h30 registration (start 7h30) for the events of the Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club
